COINN aligns with global health leaders to emphasize the critical importance of maternal and newborn health, highlighted in the World Health Organization’s “Trends in Maternal Mortality 2000 to 2023” report released today.
In 2023, an estimated 260,000 women died from pregnancy-related causes, over 2 million neonates died, and there were 2 million stillbirths—equating to one preventable death every seven seconds. Alarmingly, over 90% of these deaths occurred in low- and lower-middle-income countries, underscoring significant global health disparities.
As neonatal nurses, we witness firsthand the challenges in maternal and newborn care. The “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures” campaign calls for intensified efforts to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths and to prioritize investment in the health and well-being of women and their babies.
We urge governments, healthcare institutions, and communities to:
Invest in Quality Care: Allocate resources to ensure accessible and high-quality maternal and newborn healthcare services.
Support the Neonatal Nursing Workforce: Recognize the pivotal role of neonatal nurses in delivering essential care to the small and sick newborn.
Address Health Inequities: Implement policies that reduce disparities and promote health equity for all mothers and babies.
Together, we can ensure that every mother and newborn has the opportunity not just to survive, but to thrive.
On behalf of The Council of International Neonatal Nurses (COINN)
