The Council of International Neonatal Nurses (COINN) expresses deep concern and dismay regarding the recent decision of the United States of America to withdraw its support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and, additionally, to cease funding for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) newborn health programs. Historically, the United States has been a pivotal leader in advancing global health initiatives, providing critical resources, expertise, and leadership to address the healthcare needs of vulnerable populations, particularly in neonatal care. The cessation of such support is a devastating setback for global public health and will have far-reaching consequences for neonatal health programs worldwide.
The United States' disengagement from these key global health efforts represents a significant disruption in ongoing initiatives aimed at improving neonatal outcomes, reducing infant mortality, and enhancing maternal and child health in low- and middle-income countries. The withdrawal of financial and technical support undermines decades of progress made in the fight against preventable neonatal deaths and complications, which disproportionately affect the most marginalized populations. This decision, therefore, not only erodes global health infrastructures but also jeopardizes the hard-won gains achieved in neonatal care, particularly in regions that are most in need of assistance and has serious implications for countries to meet the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Council of International Neonatal Nurses (COINN) remains resolutely committed to advocating for the preservation and enhancement of neonatal health standards worldwide. We stand united with our international partners, including healthcare providers, non-governmental organizations, and governmental entities, to continue promoting and supporting the health and well-being of neonates globally. In the face of such challenges, COINN pledges to uphold its mission of advancing neonatal care, ensuring that every newborn, regardless of their geographic location, receives the best possible start in life. The path forward will require collaborative efforts, increased advocacy, and sustained commitment to global neonatal health. COINN reaffirms its dedication to working alongside all stakeholders to ensure that the critical needs of neonates and their families remain a priority on the global health agenda.
